Sound Session #586 (2/12/17) + Month Break

SNSS

On this week's episode ofÂSound Session, DJ Nphared and I ran through new joints from artists like CyHi The Prynce, Smoke DZA, Nick Grant, Vince Staples, Locksmith, SiR + Anderson .Paak + King Mez, Dave B, Large Sean & Jeremih, Smino, King Reign (RIP), Loyle Carner, Porter Ray, Rex Orange Canton, Matt Martians, Syd, NAO, Gabriel Garzon-Montano, Sonder, and more.  Unfortunately, the recording equipment glitched out down the stretch (lost a 3-1 lead) and we missed out on the concluding 35 minutes of the show.  Highly recommend tracking downwardly those records when yous accept time though.  All heatrocks.

I assume you've already heard the last tape from the show though, our throwback to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Erykah Badu'due south classic debut album.  "Adjacent Lifetime" felt fitting since a) it's dope as hell, and b) we're going on a brief 4 calendar week hiatus and will see you once more in mid-March.  I'm headed downward to Brazil for my ESPN day job and while we were able to broadcast from Australia when I was out there recently, the structure isn't in place to keep that going for this trip.

Never fright though, every bit long as the world is still effectually in a calendar month, we'll be back.  Feel free to stay in impact my socials in the interim: Twitter / Facebook / Instagram.  See you before long!

SNSS

On behalf of the wonderful city of Seattle and all its denizens, I apologize for the atrocity of a NFL game the nation witnessed last nighttime.  Here in i of our ESPN Commonwealth of australia offices, I had a tough time explaining to my coworkers why the Seahawks should be taken seriously as Super Bowl contenders, but at least the defence force came to play.  An offensive line has never been more aptly named, however.  "Turrible" (c) Charles Barkley (speaking of Chuck, NBA's back this week!).

The Biggest podcast with DJ Hyphen

Posted in Interviews, Other Peoples' Interviews, Radio, Random Ish, Audio Session on September 1st, 2016 by Hyphen

Fresh off a yr-long stint across the pond my bro DJ Hyphen comes through for one of my favorite episodes to date. We spend minimal fourth dimension on his back story and then delve into everything that comes to our minds from Game Of Thrones to Kanye. A true convo amongst music nerds. This is what The Biggest is all nigh. #ItsTheBiggest

The longtime homey Miguel Rockwell recently invited me on his super dope podcast series,ÂThe Biggest, and the episode is up now for y'all to check out.  I actually enjoyed this convo with Mike and his cohost Joe "HawkinsBird" Hawkins, who Mike affectionately refers to as "the most redundant man I've always known."  They've been recording some great conversations with all sorts of folks in the Seattle hip-hop scene, and then it was an honor to sit down with them and chop it up.

There's all sorts of random Hyphen-related trivia sprinkled in here as we completely nerd out about random topics.  This is probably the virtually you'll e'er hear me talk, and so you've been warned!  Enjoy!

Big Sean ft. Drake & Kanye West – Blessings (video)

Posted in Artists, Music Videos on March 7th, 2015 by Hyphen

This has been my theme vocal and so far in 2015.

A year ago, I was most to move to Los Angeles to pursue an ESPN role in sales.  At the last moment, Amazon swooped in out of nowhere and convinced me to stay in Seattle to work on their digital music team.  While the job was a great i and the people were crawly, I could tell early on that ESPN was actually where I belonged and I was anxious to go back.  I idea it might exist years downwardly the line, but then I got the call to rejoin the Worldwide Leader In Sports with the opportunity of a lifetime.  They sent me to London for the year to work in our office here and it's already been a life changing feel.  Sometimes I'll be out exploring London and just randomly think to myself…"I'm waaaaaaaay up, I experience blessed!"

Audio Session #500 (1/11/15)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on January 12th, 2015 by Hyphen

SNSS

This was a Sound Session to remember.  In 2015, the show volition attain two pregnant milestones and this week marked the first of those: our 500th show.  We started SNSS in May of 2005, not knowing how long we'd do it, what it would become, or the impact nosotros would have on the Seattle hip-hop scene (and perchance the national scene, here and there).  Turns out, J. Moore and I put on a pretty decent radio show that music heads by and large enjoy…and 500 Sundays afterwards, hither we are, on the verge of our 2nd milestone: the 10 year SNSS ceremony in May.

For episode #500, nosotros thought nosotros'd take a trip downward memory lane and play a variety of songs from artists we championed heavily on the show.  Some were already well established (Hov, Dilla, Mutual, Kanye), but the majority were artists that nosotros were able to support early on in their careers.  As a outcome, we've been honored to exist the place where lots of our listeners were exposed to developing artists that afterward grew into some of the all-time in the game (if I had a nickel for every, "maaaan, the first fourth dimension I heard ____ was on SNSS!"…).  Lots of artists got their first ever radio spins or interviews with our show and it'southward truly a pleasure to assistance give these cats the shine they deserve.  So enjoy this boom from the past, with classics from the same heavyweights, plus good friends of the show J. Cole, Blackness Milk, Royce Da 5'9″, Jake One, Shad, U-Due north-I, The Physics, Little Blood brother, Macklemore, Kendrick Lamar, Mayer Hawthorne, Piffling Dragon, and more than.  These were all important records/artists during the terminal 500 shows and we enjoyed spinning some of their best fabric all night.

For the concluding track, we went dorsum…style back…dorsum into fourth dimension…and pulled out a archetype DJ Honda/Mos Def rail that I'm sure you all know.  This was the last record I played on my college radio show (KSPC what up!  Kev Sakoda what up!!!) when I graduated (Pomona-Pitzer what up!!!) and it has special significance to me.  As mentioned on the testify and hinted nearly previously on my socials, I've decided to pursue a work opportunity at my twenty-four hour period job, ESPN, which will require me to take an extended business trip to our London office for nigh a yr.  When a company similar ESPN says they want to fly you to London to go international and managerial experience, it's pretty much a no brainer…

That said, I'm really pitiful that I won't be joining J on air during my time abroad.  Even so, much like the remainder of the iceberg you don't see nether the water (SNSS as glacial metaphor: +2 points), there'southward a lot of back cease work that we put in every week for the bear witness and I'll still be involved with all of that.  Then don't worry, it'south still SNSS all day, only you'll just have to do without hearing my silly voice and even sillier jokes on air (connect with me on Twitter/Facebook/Instagram if you demand those).  I'll continue to check in with y'all via these archives and like Mos said, "gotta lotta things I got to practice // but God willing, I'm comin' back to you…"

500 shows down, here's to 500 more!

Sound Session #499 (1-4-xv)

Posted in Episodes, Sound Session on Jan 5th, 2015 by Hyphen

SNSS

As is tradition with the first Sound Session of the year, we started this episode looking back on 2014 (shout to Skillz for rekindling his rap upward series) earlier turning our focus to the days ahead.  J and I both feel like in that location'south lots of good free energy around correct now, and then we're excited to run across what 2015 brings, personally, professionally, cultural, etc..  Hopefully you lot guys are equally excited for the new year, but as we mentioned on the bear witness, nosotros're not really a fan of resolutions.  Continued evolution through beloved and learning and new experiences should be the goal, and that should happen daily, not merely at the meridian of the twelvemonth.  Make it happen…

On this calendar week'due south show, we ran new music from ASAP Rocky, J. Cole, Mark Ronson, Mystikal, Funkghost, CRL CRRLL, Lion Infant, Lilliputian Simz, Tope, Kenn Starr, Joey Badass, Drake, D'Angelo, and more.  Lots of skillful music out there correct now, hope yous enjoy!

And before I go, a quick word on one of my favorite media figures, and a coworker at ESPN, Stuart Scott.  If you grew up in the 90's and liked sports & music, Stu defined the intersection of the two.  In that regard, he was similarly as impactful equally folks like Allen Iverson, the Fab 5, or Shaq.  He literally changed the media mural by himself and by being himself.  He never compromisedHe was 100% genuine and the man y'all saw on TV was the same man in real life.

Growing up, I spent countless hours watching him cover sports and those were really determinative years for me.  While everyone I watched on ESPN helped forge my desire to join the company later in life, he was probably the on-air personality I connected with the about.  He was like a skilful friend you saw all the time.  He was one of the homies.  That was our guy.  Today, he'south still reflected in the manner all of us lxxx's babies bring hip-hop into the workplace.

Most importantly, he was a dude that simply lived life the way it'south meant to be washed: to the fullest…existence you…full of love and low-cal.  Rest in peace to an icon and an inspiration.  Nosotros love y'all Stu, forever.

Run into you guys next week for SNSS #500!

SNSS

On this week's SNSS, J. The bear witness goes on, every bit ever, and this calendar week was no exception.  Relish the cuts…

Sound Session #459 (3-xxx-14)

Posted in Episodes, Audio Session on April 7th, 2014 by Hyphen

SNSS

Apologies for the filibuster on this calendar week's episode, but I was decorated wrapping upwards my day job with ESPN so things were a flake hectic.  Special shout and many thanks to all my ESPN folks that I've worked with the concluding few years and specially those that peep this bear witness each week.  It's been fun!  Thank y'all guys for everything.  Guess I'll brand the announcement of where I'm headed in the adjacent update…

Anyway, this calendar week'southward SNSS episode featured new music from Wu-Tang Association, TwizzMatic, Sean C & LV, Busta Rhymes, Raz Simone, Sam Smith, Buddy, SZA, Mila J, Large Boi, CunninLynguists, Tunji, and more.  Plus, nosotros were joined in studio by a new (and very dope) local grouping named Hightek Lowlives, and up and coming singer TeeFLii swung past to talk about his new release with DJ Mustard and 2 Chainz.

Savor the show!
