What To Serve With Yorkshire Puddings

what to serve with yorkshire puddings

From the traditional to the quirky, and sweet to savoury, there are lots of options for what to serve with Yorkshire puddings!

Yorkshire puddings are a quintessentially English side dish, and if you've ever had a traditional Sunday roast dinner, you'll almost definitely have enjoyed these little delicacies before.

Made using a batter of eggs, flour, and milk, then baked in the oven, these puddings can be giant or bitesized, and used as the base for a wide variety of meals and snacks.

It's worth noting here that you can freeze your puddings too, making them a good choice for those evenings when you just don't have the time or inclination to cook from scratch.

Just make sure they're cooled thoroughly after cooking, and pop into freeze bags or a container before placing in the freezer.

Let's take a look at some of the best side dishes and accompaniments that you might want to choose from…

1. Roast beef with all the trimmings

This is the most traditional pairing, and it's a meal that features on many families' meal plans every week of the year!

A roasted joint of beef is typically served with Yorkshire puddings alongside vegetables such as roasted or mashed potatoes, carrots, parsnips, and broccoli.

Many people like to add a little horseradish sauce, and don't forget lashings of hot gravy!

Some people like to make a giant Yorkie and add the other elements of their dinner as the filling.

It's also becoming increasingly popular to make a Yorkshire pudding wrap, and you'll often see these available at street food fairs.

2. Beef bourguignon

Beef bourguignon is a wonderfully rich French stew, made with red wine, carrots, mushrooms, and bacon.

It's a great dish to be served on winter nights when you need a little bit of comfort, and it's perfect with a Yorkshire pudding. If you like, you can also add some mashed potato and your favourite green vegetables.

My beef bourguignon recipe is particularly popular with readers, and it's the kind of dish that you can just chuck in the slow cooker and be rewarded with a beautiful meal just a few hours later.

3. Oxo roast potatoes

I've got a couple of secrets up my sleeve when it comes to making the very best roast potatoes, and one of those is Oxo!

My Oxo roast potatoes are parboiled and ruffled up in a colander to help create those satisfying crispy bits, before being baked in either the oven or an air fryer.

The additional of a beef stock cube adds to the golden appearance and a delectable savoury flavour.

4. Full English breakfast

When it comes to what to serve with Yorkshire puddings, a full English breakfast is definitely a bit of a wacky choice, but don't knock it until you've tried it!

After all, pancakes a popular breakfast choice, and they're actually very similar to Yorkies in terms of the ingredients – it's just the cooking process that's a little different.

Fry up your favourite breakfast items, such as bacon, sausage, eggs, baked beans, and mushrooms, and use your pudding as either a side dish or a casing.

Serve with a steaming hot cup of tea or coffee and orange juice.

This option is especially good if you have overnight guests and you want to wow them in the morning with something a little out of the ordinary.

5. Your favourite curry

A Yorkshire pudding can make a fantastic alternative to a naan bread, and it will definitely be a talking point if you're hosting a dinner party!

Any curry can work well here, and you'll be using your Yorkie to mop up the sauce.

Alternatively, why not try a Thai green curry?

6. Jam

A warm Yorkshire pudding with a generous dollop of fruity jam is the ultimate after dinner treat!

If you like, you can add some natural yoghurt and a fresh fruit salad.

This is also a fantastic choice for a simple but indulgent weekend breakfast.

7. Lemon juice and sugar

This combination is famous when it comes to pancakes, and it's also a great choice when it comes to what to serve with Yorkshire puddings.

It makes for a straightforward, no-fuss treat that would be equally as good for a quick snack and as a way to use up leftover puddings as it would be served as a dessert for friends and family.

You never know, this simple little delight might just end up being one of your signature dishes!

8. Sausages

Toad in the hole is one of my go-to weeknight meals.

It takes hardly any time to prepare, and you can sit back and enjoy a nice glass of wine whilst it cooks away in the oven.

Choose a good quality pork sausage, and heat your oven to 200 degrees (fan).

Place eight sausages in a roasting tin and bake for around 15 minutes, or until golden and nicely browned.

Meanwhile, add 140 grams of plain flour to a mixing bowl, and crack in 2 eggs with a pinch of sea salt. Mix well with a whisk or electric mixer. Next, gradually add 175ml semi skimmed milk, and mix until it forms a smooth batter.

Pour your batter over the sausages, and return to the oven for around 30 minutes, or until risen and golden.

Serve with piping hot onion gravy and your favourite veggies.

Of course, you could also make single serving Yorkies and serve them as a side dish for sausages!

9. Mince and onions

Mince and onions is another typically English dish that's great during the autumn and winter months, served with a Yorkshire pudding.

I like to use this minced beef and onions recipe, as it takes just 30 minutes to make from scratch, and uses ingredients that you'll likely already have in your pantry!

10. Chilli con carne

Chilli con carne with a Yorkshire pudding side might be a little out of the ordinary, but it's an increasingly common meal that you might see served in countryside pubs.

11. Quiche

Love quiche but fancy something a little bit different?

Instead of a pastry casing, using a Yorkshire pudding instead!

Try this roasted veggie quiche with a Yorkie crust. It's quick and easy, and serves one hungry person.

12. Ice cream and golden syrup

Ice cream and golden syrup is such an indulgent option when it comes to what to serve with Yorkshire puddings, and it's the kind of sweet treat that you'll hear requests for again and again.

You can add your own garnishes here if you want to make things a little more fancy.

Some options include fresh fruit, compote, whipped cream, and a drenching of cocoa powder.

13. Smoked salmon and cream cheese

If you're searching for a starter option of some finger food that would work well on a sophisticated buffet, try making mini Yorkies and serving them with a cut of smoked salmon and a little cream cheese.

To make the flavours really come to life, add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and a few sprigs of fresh dill.
